Council approves letter to province opposing region's recommendation, says move would infringe on growth
Halton Hills councillors say they were shocked to see Oakville Mayor Rob Burton’s motion requesting the province look to expand the Greenbelt to include whitebelt lands around Milton and Georgetown South.
“It was pretty outrageous that it came from nowhere,” said Jane Fogal. “It was pretty outrageous that our colleagues supported that resolution.”
Halton Hills staff drew up a letter in response, declaring the town’s support for the province looking to expand the Greenbelt into the outer ring of the study area, but not into the whitebelt.

Longo chosen from 16 candidates who addressed council May 7
Local business leader Peter Longo will serve as Oakville’s Ward 4 town councillor until the end of the current term of council on Nov. 30.
Longo, who resides in Ward 4, was appointed to the position during a special council meeting, which was held to fill the vacancy on May 7.
He will also serve on the town’s administrative services committee.
Council heard from 16 candidates who each had five minutes to make their case as to why they should be chosen to fill the council seat.

Consul General, MPP, and Mayor attend as dignitaries
A 300-plus audience was on hand Sunday, May 6 as the Canadian Croatian Choral Society marked its sixth anniversary with its final spring concert at Oakville’s Holy Trinity Croatian Catholic Church.
Among them was Andrea Javor, consul general for the Consulate General of the Republic of Croatia, who commented on the ensemble’s impressive growth since its 2013 inception and commended the initiative to establish a youth choir to ensure that Croatian culture remains strong within the Canadian mosaic.
Also in attendance were Oakville Mayor Rob Burton and Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn, who read greetings from the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Daiene Vernile, who was responsible for the Ontario Trillium Grant for the choral society.
